[ Upstream commit dc87740c8a6806bd2162bfb441770e4e53be5601 ]
If rcu_print_task_stall() is invoked on an rcu_node structure that does
not contain any tasks blocking the current grace period, it takes an
early exit that fails to release that rcu_node structure's lock. This
results in a self-deadlock, which is detected by lockdep.
To reproduce this bug:
tools/testing/selftests/rcutorture/bin/kvm.sh --allcpus --duration 3 --trust-make --configs "TREE03" --kconfig "CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING=y" --bootargs "rcutorture.stall_cpu=30 rcutorture.stall_cpu_block=1 rcutorture.fwd_progress=0 rcutorture.test_boost=0"
This will also result in other complaints, including RCU's scheduler
hook complaining about blocking rather than preemption and an rcutorture
writer stall.
Only a partial RCU CPU stall warning message will be printed because of
the self-deadlock.
This commit therefore releases the lock on the rcu_print_task_stall()
function's early exit path.

This commit adds a number of lockdep_assert_irqs_disabled() calls
to rcu_sched_clock_irq() and a number of the functions that it calls.
The point of this is to help track down a situation where lockdep appears
to be insisting that interrupts are enabled within these functions, which
should only ever be invoked from the scheduling-clock interrupt handler.

The for loop in rcu_print_task_stall() always omits ts[0], which points

The soft watchdog timer function checks if a virtual machine
was suspended and hence what looks like a lockup in fact
is a false positive.
This is what kvm_check_and_clear_guest_paused() does: it
tests guest PVCLOCK_GUEST_STOPPED (which is set by the host)
and if it's set then we need to touch all watchdogs and bail
out.
Watchdog timer function runs from IRQ, so PVCLOCK_GUEST_STOPPED
check works fine.
There is, however, one more watchdog that runs from IRQ, so
watchdog timer fn races with it, and that watchdog is not aware
of PVCLOCK_GUEST_STOPPED - RCU stall detector.
apic_timer_interrupt()
smp_apic_timer_interrupt()
hrtimer_interrupt()
__hrtimer_run_queues()
tick_sched_timer()
tick_sched_handle()
update_process_times()
rcu_sched_clock_irq()
This triggers RCU stalls on our devices during VM resume.
If tick_sched_handle()->rcu_sched_clock_irq() runs on a VCPU
before watchdog_timer_fn()->kvm_check_and_clear_guest_paused()
then there is nothing on this VCPU that touches watchdogs and
RCU reads stale gp stall timestamp and new jiffies value, which
makes it think that RCU has stalled.
Make RCU stall watchdog aware of PVCLOCK_GUEST_STOPPED and
don't report RCU stalls when we resume the VM.

The try_invoke_on_locked_down_task() function requires that
interrupts be enabled, but it is called with interrupts disabled from
rcu_print_task_stall(), resulting in an "IRQs not enabled as expected"
diagnostic. This commit therefore updates rcu_print_task_stall()
to accumulate a list of the first few tasks while holding the current
leaf rcu_node structure's ->lock, then releases that lock and only then
uses try_invoke_on_locked_down_task() to attempt to obtain per-task
detailed information. Of course, as soon as ->lock is released, the
task might exit, so the get_task_struct() function is used to prevent
the task structure from going away in the meantime.

When all quiescent states have been seen, it is normally the grace-period
kthread that is in trouble. Although the existing stack trace from

indicates that there is too much noise for this to be worthwhile.
This commit therefore removes this stack trace from the output.

If the grace-period kthread is starved, idle threads' extended quiescent

Currently, an RCU-preempt CPU stall warning simply lists the PIDs of
those tasks holding up the current grace period. This can be helpful,
but more can be even more helpful.
To this end, this commit adds the nesting level, whether the task
thinks it was preempted in its current RCU read-side critical section,
whether RCU core has asked this task for a quiescent state, whether the
expedited-grace-period hint is set, and whether the task believes that
it is on the blocked-tasks list (it must be, or it would not be printed,
but if things are broken, best not to take too much for granted).

This commit adds rcu_gp_might_be_stalled(), which returns true if there
is some reason to believe that the RCU grace period is stalled. The use
case is where an RCU free-memory path needs to allocate memory in order
to free it, a situation that should be avoided where possible.
But where it is necessary, there is always the alternative of using
synchronize_rcu() to wait for a grace period in order to avoid the
allocation. And if the grace period is stalled, allocating memory to
asynchronously wait for it is a bad idea of epic proportions: Far better
to let others use the memory, because these others might actually be
able to free that memory before the grace period ends.
Thus, rcu_gp_might_be_stalled() can be used to help decide whether
allocating memory on an RCU free path is a semi-reasonable course
of action.

It is possible that an over-long grace period will end while the RCU
CPU stall warning message is printing. In this case, the estimate of
the offending grace period's duration can be erroneous due to refetching
of rcu_state.gp_start, which will now be the time of the newly started
grace period. Computation of this duration clearly needs to use the
start time for the old over-long grace period, not the fresh new one.
This commit avoids such errors by causing both print_other_cpu_stall() and
print_cpu_stall() to reuse the value previously fetched by their caller.

Although the accesses used to determine whether or not a stall should
be printed are an integral part of the concurrency algorithm governing
use of the corresponding variables, the values that are simply printed
are ancillary. As such, it is best to use data_race() for these accesses
in order to provide the greatest latitude in the use of KCSAN for the
other accesses that are an integral part of the algorithm. This commit
therefore changes the relevant uses of READ_ONCE() to data_race().

In normal production, an RCU CPU stall warning at boottime is often
just as bad as at any other time. In fact, given the desire for fast
boot, any sort of long-term stall at boot is a bad idea. However,
heavy rcutorture testing on large hyperthreaded systems can generate
boottime RCU CPU stalls as a matter of course. This commit therefore
provides a kernel boot parameter that suppresses reporting of boottime
RCU CPU stall warnings and similarly of rcutorture writer stalls.
Signed-off-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@kernel.org>
Currently rcu_check_gp_start_stall() complains if a grace period takes
too long to start, where "too long" is roughly one RCU CPU stall-warning
interval. This has worked well, but there are some debugging Kconfig
options (such as CONFIG_EFI_PGT_DUMP=y) that can make booting take a
very long time, so much so that the stall-warning interval has expired
before RCU's grace-period kthread has even been spawned.
This commit therefore resets the rcu_state.gp_req_activity and
rcu_state.gp_activity timestamps just before the grace-period kthread
is spawned, and modifies the checks and adds ordering to ensure that
if rcu_check_gp_start_stall() sees that the grace-period kthread
has been spawned, that it will also see the resets applied to the
rcu_state.gp_req_activity and rcu_state.gp_activity timestamps.

when RCU CPU stall warning messages could be abbreviated using a long-gone
Kconfig option. This commit therefore adds these single characters to
already-printed strings in the calling functions, and then eliminates
both print_cpu_stall_info_begin() and print_cpu_stall_info_end().

The rcu_print_detail_task_stall(), rcu_print_task_stall_begin(), and
rcu_print_task_stall_end() functions were defined to allow long-gone
Kconfig options to provide an abbreviated RCU CPU stall warning printout.
This commit saves a few lines of code by inlining them into their sole
callers.
While in the area, a useless call of rcu_print_detail_task_stall_rnp()
on the root rcu_node structure was eliminated. If there is only one
rcu_node structure, its tasks get printed twice, but if there are more,
the root rcu_node structure is guaranteed to have an empty list of blocked
tasks, hence the uselessness. (Long ago, root rcu_node structures with
non-empty ->blkd_tasks lists could happen, but no longer.)

This commit completes the process of consolidating the code for RCU CPU
stall warnings for normal grace periods by moving the remaining such
code from kernel/rcu/tree.c to kernel/rcu/tree_stall.h.

The RCU CPU stall-warning code for normal grace periods is currently
scattered across two files, due to earlier Tiny RCU support for RCU
CPU stall warnings and for old Kconfig options that have long since
been retired. Given that it is hard for the lead RCU maintainer to
find relevant stall-warning code, it would be good to consolidate it.
This commit continues this process by moving stall-warning code from
kernel/rcu/tree_plugin.c to a new kernel/rcu/tree_stall.h file.

This commit starts this process by moving stall-warning code from
kernel/rcu/update.c to a new kernel/rcu/tree_stall.h file.
Note that the definitions of rcu_cpu_stall_suppress and
rcu_cpu_stall_timeout must remain in kernel/rcu/update.h to provide
compatibility for kernel boot parameter lists.
