4c38c8f5d2 perf unwind arm64: Add missing errno.h header
Since it uses EINVAL unconditionally, it needs to also unconditionally
include errno.h.

Detected when recent changes made errno.h not be included by chance when
tools/perf/arch/arm64/util/unwind-libunwind.c gets included by
tools/perf/util/libunwind/arm64.c.

Putting this changeset just before that change so that we don't lose
bisectability on arm64.

fd5cead23f perf trace: Beautify statx syscall 'flag' and 'mask' arguments
To test it, build samples/statx/test_statx, which I did as:

  $ make headers_install
  $ cc -I ~/git/linux/usr/include samples/statx/test-statx.c -o /tmp/statx

And then use perf trace on it:

  # perf trace -e statx /tmp/statx /etc/passwd
  statx(/etc/passwd) = 0
  results=7ff

  #

Adding a probe to get the filename collected as well:

  # perf probe 'vfs_getname=getname_flags:72 pathname=result->name:string'
  Added new event:
    probe:vfs_getname    (on getname_flags:72 with pathname=result->name:string)

You can now use it in all perf tools, such as:

	  perf record -e probe:vfs_getname -aR sleep 1

  # trace --no-inherit -e statx /tmp/statx -D -O /etc/passwd > /dev/null
     0.169 ( 0.007 ms): statx(dfd: CWD, filename: /etc/passwd, flags: SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW|STATX_DONT_SYNC, mask: BTIME, buffer: 0x7ffda9bf50f0) = 0
  #

Same technique could be used to collect and beautify the result put in
the 'buffer' argument.

Finally do a system wide 'perf trace' session looking for any use of statx,
then run the test proggie with various flags:

  # trace -e statx
   16612.967 ( 0.028 ms): statx/4562 statx(dfd: CWD, filename: /tmp/statx, flags: SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW, mask: TYPE|MODE|NLINK|UID|GID|ATIME|MTIME|CTIME|INO|SIZE|BLOCKS|BTIME, buffer: 0x7ffef195d660) = 0
   33064.447 ( 0.011 ms): statx/4569 statx(dfd: CWD, filename: /tmp/statx, flags: SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW|STATX_FORCE_SYNC, mask: TYPE|MODE|NLINK|UID|GID|ATIME|MTIME|CTIME|INO|SIZE|BLOCKS|BTIME, buffer: 0x7ffc5484c790) = 0
   36050.891 ( 0.023 ms): statx/4576 statx(dfd: CWD, filename: /tmp/statx, flags: SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW, mask: BTIME, buffer: 0x7ffeb18b66e0) = 0
   38039.889 ( 0.023 ms): statx/4584 statx(dfd: CWD, filename: /tmp/statx, flags: SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW, mask: TYPE|MODE|NLINK|UID|GID|ATIME|MTIME|CTIME|INO|SIZE|BLOCKS|BTIME, buffer: 0x7fff1db0ea90) = 0
  ^C#

This one also starts moving the beautifiers from files directly included
in builtin-trace.c to separate objects + a beauty.h header with
prototypes, so that we can add test cases in tools/perf/tests/ to fire
syscalls with various arguments and then get them intercepted as
syscalls:sys_enter_foo or raw_syscalls:sys_enter + sys_exit to then
format and check that the formatted output is the one we expect.

d451a205da perf/sdt/x86: Move OP parser to tools/perf/arch/x86/
SDT marker argument is in N@OP format. N is the size of argument and OP
is the actual assembly operand. OP is arch dependent component and hence
it's parsing logic also should be placed under tools/perf/arch/.

2d01ecc580 perf/sdt/x86: Add renaming logic for (missing) 8 bit registers
I found couple of events using al, bl, cl and dl registers for argument.
These are not directly accepted by uprobe_events and thus needs to be
mapped to ax, bx, cx and dx respectively.

Few ex,

  /usr/bin/qemu-system-s390x
    css_adapter_interrupt: 1@%bl
    css_chpid_add: 1@%cl 1@%sil 1@%dl
    dma_bdrv_io: 8@%rbx 8@%rbp -8@%r14 1@%al

  /usr/bin/postgres
    buffer__read__done: ... -1@-bash -1@%al
    buffer__read__start: ... -1@%al

I don't find any sdt events using ah, bh,... registers. But I also don't
see any reason to not use them, so there might be rare events using
these registers, and if so, perf should have a renaming logic for them
too.

3b1f8311f6 perf probe: Add sdt probes arguments into the uprobe cmd string
An sdt probe can be associated with arguments but they were not passed
to the user probe tracing interface (uprobe_events); this patch adapts
the sdt argument descriptors according to the uprobe input format.

As the uprobe parser does not support scaled address mode, perf will
skip arguments which cannot be adapted to the uprobe format.

Here are the results:

44ca9341f6 perf powerpc: Choose local entry point with kretprobes
perf now uses an offset from _text/_stext for kretprobes if the kernel
supports it, rather than the actual function name. As such, let's choose
the LEP for powerpc ABIv2 so as to ensure the probe gets hit. Do it only
if the kernel supports specifying offsets with kretprobes.

0fcb1da4ab perf annotate: AArch64 support
This is a regex converted version from the original:

	https://lkml.org/lkml/2016/5/19/461

Add basic support to recognise AArch64 assembly. This allows perf to
identify AArch64 instructions that branch to other parts within the
same function, thereby properly annotating them.

Rebased onto new cross-arch annotation bits:

acc9bfb5fa perf annotate: Improve support for ARM
By using arch->init() to set up some regular expressions to associate
ins_ops to ARM instructions, ditching that old table that has
instructions not present on ARM.

Take advantage of having an arch->init() to hide more arm specific stuff
from the common code, like the objdump details.

The regular expressions comes from a patch written by Kim Phillips.

763d8960a1 perf annotate: Add per arch instructions annotate handlers
Another step in supporting cross annotation.

The arch specific tables are put in:

   tools/perf/arch/$ARCH/annotation/instructions.c

which, so far, just plug instructions to a bunch of parsers/formatters,
but may have more as the need arises.

This is an alternative implementation to a previous attempt made by Ravi
Bangoria.

a1d9972e59 perf uretprobe ppc64le: Fix probe location
Perf uretprobe probes on GEP(Global Entry Point) which fails to record

  $ cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/uprobe_events
    r:probe_uprobe_test/doit /home/ravi/uprobe_test:0x00000000000005f8

This is not the case with kretprobes because the kernel itself finds LEP
and probes on it.

293d5b4394 perf probe: Support probing on offline cross-arch binary
Support probing on offline cross-architecture binary by adding getting
the target machine arch from ELF and choose correct register string for
the machine.

Here is an example:
  -----
  $ perf probe --vmlinux=./vmlinux-arm --definition 'do_sys_open $params'
  p:probe/do_sys_open do_sys_open+0 dfd=%r5:s32 filename=%r1:u32 flags=%r6:s32 mode=%r3:u16
  -----

Here, we can get probe/do_sys_open from above and append it to to the target
machine's tracing/kprobe_events file in the tracefs mountput, usually
/sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events (or /sys/kernel/tracing/kprobe_events).

3d918fb13a perf intel-pt: Fix occasional decoding errors when tracing system-wide
In order to successfully decode Intel PT traces, context switch events

However, since commit 86c2786994 ("perf intel-pt: Add support for

99e608b595 perf probe ppc64le: Fix probe location when using DWARF
Powerpc has Global Entry Point and Local Entry Point for functions. LEP
catches call from both the GEP and the LEP. Symbol table of ELF contains
GEP and Offset from which we can calculate LEP, but debuginfo does not
have LEP info.

Currently, perf prioritize symbol table over dwarf to probe on LEP for
ppc64le. But when user tries to probe with function parameter, we fall
back to using dwarf(i.e. GEP) and when function called via LEP, probe
will never hit.

For example:

  $ objdump -d vmlinux
    ...
    do_sys_open():
    c0000000002eb4a0: e8 00 4c 3c addis r2,r12,232
    c0000000002eb4a4: 60 00 42 38 addi r2,r2,96
    c0000000002eb4a8: a6 02 08 7c mflr r0
    c0000000002eb4ac: d0 ff 41 fb std r26,-48(r1)

  $ sudo ./perf probe do_sys_open
  $ sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events
    p:probe/do_sys_open _text+3060904

  $ sudo ./perf probe 'do_sys_open filename:string'
  $ sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events
    p:probe/do_sys_open _text+3060896 filename_string=+0(%gpr4):string

For second case, perf probed on GEP. So when function will be called via
LEP, probe won't hit.

  $ sudo ./perf record -a -e probe:do_sys_open ls
[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.195 MB perf.data ]

To resolve this issue, let's not prioritize symbol table, let perf
decide what it wants to use. Perf is already converting GEP to LEP when
it uses symbol table. When perf uses debuginfo, let it find LEP offset
form symbol table. This way we fall back to probe on LEP for all cases.

After patch:

  $ sudo ./perf probe 'do_sys_open filename:string'
  $ sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events
    p:probe/do_sys_open _text+3060904 filename_string=+0(%gpr4):string

  $ sudo ./perf record -a -e probe:do_sys_open ls
[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
    [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.197 MB perf.data (11 samples) ]

203d8a4aa6 perf s390: Fix 'start' address of module's map
At present, when creating module's map, perf gets 'start' address by
parsing '/proc/modules', but it's the module base address, it isn't the
start address of the '.text' section.

In most arches, it's OK. But for s390, it places 'GOT' and 'PLT'
relocations before '.text' section. So there exists an offset between
module base address and '.text' section, which will incur wrong symbol
resolution for modules.

Fix this bug by getting 'start' address of module's map from parsing
'/sys/module/[module name]/sections/.text', not from '/proc/modules'.

c8b5f2c96d tools: Introduce str_error_r()
The tools so far have been using the strerror_r() GNU variant, that
returns a string, be it the buffer passed or something else.

But that, besides being tricky in cases where we expect that the
function using strerror_r() returns the error formatted in a provided
buffer (we have to check if it returned something else and copy that
instead), breaks the build on systems not using glibc, like Alpine
Linux, where musl libc is used.

So, introduce yet another wrapper, str_error_r(), that has the GNU
interface, but uses the portable XSI variant of strerror_r(), so that
users rest asured that the provided buffer is used and it is what is
returned.

f3d082ceab perf tools: Sync copy of syscall_64.tbl with the kernel
Noticed by the build system, that emitted this warning:

Warning: x86_64's syscall_64.tbl differs from kernel

This was due to the wiring up of the recently added preadv2 & pwritev2
syscalls to the compat code, which hadn't been done by the patch
introducing those syscalls: 4babf2c5ef ("x86: wire up preadv2 and
pwritev2").

The patch doing the compat wiring was:

  482dd2ef12 ("x86/syscalls: Wire up compat readv2/writev2 syscalls")

This just silences the perf build warning, as compat syscalls still
can't be supported in 'perf trace´ due to limitations in the
raw_syscalls:sys_{enter,exit} tracepoints it relies on.

44b1e60ab5 perf stat: Basic support for TopDown in perf stat
Add basic plumbing for TopDown in perf stat

TopDown is intended to replace the frontend cycles idle/ backend cycles
idle metrics in standard perf stat output. These metrics are not
reliable in many workloads, due to out of order effects.

This implements a new --topdown mode in perf stat (similar to
--transaction) that measures the pipe line bottlenecks using
standardized formulas. The measurement can be all done with 5 counters
(one fixed counter)

The result are four metrics:

FrontendBound, BackendBound, BadSpeculation, Retiring

that describe the CPU pipeline behavior on a high level.

The full top down methology has many hierarchical metrics. This
implementation only supports level 1 which can be collected without
multiplexing. A full implementation of top down on top of perf is
available in pmu-tools toplev. (http://github.com/andikleen/pmu-tools)

The current version works on Intel Core CPUs starting with Sandy Bridge,
and Atom CPUs starting with Silvermont. In principle the generic
metrics should be also implementable on other out of order CPUs.

TopDown level 1 uses a set of abstracted metrics which are generic to
out of order CPU cores (although some CPUs may not implement all of
them):

topdown-total-slots Available slots in the pipeline
topdown-slots-issued Slots issued into the pipeline
  topdown-slots-retired Slots successfully retired
topdown-fetch-bubbles Pipeline gaps in the frontend
  topdown-recovery-bubbles Pipeline gaps during recovery
                            from misspeculation

These metrics then allow to compute four useful metrics:

FrontendBound, BackendBound, Retiring, BadSpeculation.

Add a new --topdown options to enable events. When --topdown is
specified set up events for all topdown events supported by the kernel.
Add topdown-* as a special case to the event parser, as is needed for
all events containing -.

The actual code to compute the metrics is in follow-on patches.

v2: Use standard sysctl read function.
v3: Move x86 specific code to arch/
v4: Enable --metric-only implicitly for topdown.
v5: Add --single-thread option to not force per core mode
v6: Fix output order of topdown metrics
v7: Allow combining with -d
v8: Remove --single-thread again
v9: Rename functions, adding arch_ and topdown_.
v10: Expand man page and describe TopDown better
Paste intro into commit description.
Print error when malloc fails.

0b3c2264ae perf symbols: Fix kallsyms perf test on ppc64le
ppc64le functions have a Global Entry Point (GEP) and a Local Entry
Point (LEP). While placing a probe, we always prefer the LEP since it
catches function calls through both the GEP and the LEP. In order to do
this, we fixup the function entry points during elf symbol table lookup
to point to the LEPs. This works, but breaks 'perf test kallsyms' since
the symbols loaded from the symbol table (pointing to the LEP) do not
match the symbols in kallsyms.

To fix this, we do not adjust all the symbols during symbol table load.
Instead, we note down st_other in a newly introduced arch-specific
member of perf symbol structure, and later use this to adjust the probe
trace point.

239aeba764 perf powerpc: Fix kprobe and kretprobe handling with kallsyms on ppc64le
So far, we used to treat probe point offsets as being offset from the
LEP. However, userspace applications (objdump/readelf) always show
disassembly and offsets from the function GEP. This is confusing to the
user as we will end up probing at an address different from what the
user expects when looking at the function disassembly with
readelf/objdump. Fix this by changing how we modify probe address with
perf.

If only the function name is provided, we assume the user needs the LEP.
Otherwise, if an offset is specified, we assume that the user knows the
exact address to probe based on function disassembly, and so we just
place the probe from the GEP offset.

Finally, kretprobe was also broken with kallsyms as we were trying to
specify an offset. This patch also fixes that issue.

1b700c9975 perf tools: Build syscall table .c header from kernel's syscall_64.tbl
We used libaudit to map ids to syscall names and vice-versa, but that

tables.

46bc29b970 perf tools: Add time conversion event
Intel PT uses the time members from the perf_event_mmap_page to convert
between TSC and perf time.

Due to a lack of foresight when Intel PT was implemented, those time
members were recorded in the (implementation dependent) AUXTRACE_INFO
event, the structure of which is generally inaccessible outside of the
Intel PT decoder. However now the conversion between TSC and perf time
is needed when processing a jitdump file when Intel PT has been used for
tracing.

So add a user event to record the time members. 'perf record' will
synthesize the event if the information is available. And session
processing will put a copy of the event on the session so that tools
like 'perf inject' can easily access it.

379649cfea perf tools: Fix build break on powerpc
Commit 531d241063 ("perf tools: Do not include stringify.h from the
kernel sources") seems to have accidentially removed the inclusion of
"util/header.h" from "arch/powerpc/util/header.c".

"util/header.h" provides the prototype for get_cpuid() and is needed to
build perf on Powerpc:

arch/powerpc/util/header.c:17:1: error: no previous prototype for 'get_cpuid' [-Werror=missing-prototypes]

a23f96ee4d perf tools: Use 64-bit shifts with (TSC) time conversion
Commit b9511cd761 ("perf/x86: Fix time_shift in perf_event_mmap_page")
altered the time conversion algorithms documented in the perf_event.h
header file, to use 64-bit shifts. That was done to make the code more
future-proof (i.e. some time in the future a 32-bit shift could be
allowed). Reflect those changes in perf tools.

78e6c39b23 perf kvm/powerpc: Add support for HCALL reasons
Powerpc provides hcall events that also provides insights into guest
behaviour. Enhance perf kvm stat to record and analyze hcall events.

 - To trace hcall events :
  perf kvm stat record

 - To show the results :
  perf kvm stat report --event=hcall

The result shows the number of hypervisor calls from the guest grouped
by their respective reasons displayed with the frequency.

This patch makes use of two additional tracepoints
"kvm_hv:kvm_hcall_enter" and "kvm_hv:kvm_hcall_exit". To map the hcall
codes to their respective names, it needs a mapping. Such mapping is
added in this patch in book3s_hcalls.h.

066d3593e1 perf kvm/powerpc: Port perf kvm stat to powerpc
perf kvm can be used to analyze guest exit reasons. This support already
exists in x86. Hence, porting it to powerpc.

 - To trace KVM events :
  perf kvm stat record
If many guests are running, we can track for a specific guest by using
--pid as in : perf kvm stat record --pid <pid>

 - To see the results :
  perf kvm stat report

The result shows the number of exits (from the guest context to
host/hypervisor context) grouped by their respective exit reasons with
their frequency.

Since, different powerpc machines have different KVM tracepoints, this
patch discovers the available tracepoints dynamically and accordingly
looks for them. If any single tracepoint is not present, this support
won't be enabled for reporting. To record, this will fail if any of the
events we are looking to record isn't available. Right now, its only
supported on PowerPC Book3S_HV architectures.

To analyze the different exits, group them and present them (in a slight
descriptive way) to the user, we need a mapping between the "exit code"
(dumped in the kvm_guest_exit tracepoint data) and to its related
Interrupt vector description (exit reason). This patch adds this mapping
in book3s_hv_exits.h.

It records on two available KVM tracepoints for book3s_hv:

"kvm_hv:kvm_guest_exit" and "kvm_hv:kvm_guest_enter".

Here is a sample o/p:
 # pgrep qemu
19378

2 Guests are running on the host.

 # perf kvm stat record -a
^C[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]

Some tests have sub-tests we want to run, so allow passing this.

Wang tried to avoid having to touch all tests, but then, having the

  test a = {

fails.

To fix it leave the func pointer in the main structure and pass the subtest

function pointer, not two, with and without the subtest index as an argument.

035827e9f2 perf tests: Add Intel CQM test
Peter reports that it's possible to trigger a WARN_ON_ONCE() in the
Intel CQM code by combining a hardware event and an Intel CQM
(software) event into a group. Unfortunately, the perf tools are not
able to create this bundle and we need to manually construct a test
case.

For posterity, record Peter's proof of concept test case in tools/perf
so that it presents a model for how we can perform architecture
specific tests, or "arch tests", in perf in the future.

The particular issue triggered in the test case is that when the
counter for the hardware event overflows and triggers a PMI we'll read
both the hardware event and the software event counters.
Unfortunately, for CQM that involves performing an IPI to read the CQM
event counters on all sockets, which in NMI context triggers the
WARN_ON_ONCE().

d8b167f9d8 perf tests: Move x86 tests into arch directory
Move out the x86-specific tests into tools/perf/arch/x86/tests and
define an 'arch_tests' array, which is the list of tests that only apply

We can also now begin to get rid of some of the #ifdef code that is

31b6753f95 perf tests: Add arch tests
Tests that only make sense for some architectures currently live in
the same place as the generic tests. Move out the x86-specific tests
into tools/perf/arch/x86/tests and define an 'arch_tests' array, which

The main idea is to encourage developers to add arch tests to build

bbbe6bf603 perf tools: Introduce regs_query_register_offset() for x86
regs_query_register_offset() is a helper function which converts
register name like "%rax" to offset of a register in 'struct pt_regs',
which is required by BPF prologue generator. Since the function is
identical, try to reuse the code in arch/x86/kernel/ptrace.c.

Comment inside dwarf-regs.c list the differences between this
implementation and kernel code.

get_arch_regstr() switches to regoffset_table and the old string table
is dropped.

86c2786994 perf intel-pt: Add support for PERF_RECORD_SWITCH
Add support for selecting and processing PERF_RECORD_SWITCH events for
use by Intel PT. If they are available, they will be used in preference
to sched_switch events.

This enables an unprivileged user to trace multi-threaded or
multi-process workloads with any level of perf_event_paranoid. However
it depends on kernel support for PERF_RECORD_SWITCH.

Without this patch, tracing a multi-threaded workload will decode
without error but all the data will be attributed to the main thread.

Without this patch, tracing a multi-process workload will result in
decoder errors because the decoder will not know which executable is
executing.

0de802abd1 perf tools: Add Intel PT support for using CYC packets
CYC packets are a new Intel PT feature.

CYC packets provide even finer grain timestamp information than MTC and
TSC packets. A CYC packet contains the number of CPU cycles since the
last CYC packet. Unlike MTC and TSC packets, CYC packets are only sent
when another packet is also sent.

Support for this feature is indicated by:

/sys/bus/event_source/devices/intel_pt/caps/psb_cyc

which contains "1" if the feature is supported and "0" otherwise.

CYC packets can be requested using a PMU config term e.g. perf record -e
intel_pt/cyc/u sleep 1

The frequency of CYC packets can also be specified. e.g. perf record -e
intel_pt/cyc,cyc_thresh=2/u sleep 1

CYC packets are not requested by default.

Valid cyc_thresh values are given by:

/sys/bus/event_source/devices/intel_pt/caps/cycle_thresholds

which contains a hexadecimal value, the bits of which represent valid
values e.g. bit 2 set means value 2 is valid.

The value represents the minimum number of CPU cycles that must have
passed before a CYC packet can be sent. The number of CPU cycles is:

    2 ^ (value - 1)

e.g. value 4 means 8 CPU cycles must pass before a CYC packet can be
sent. Note a CYC packet is still only sent when another packet is sent,
not at, e.g. every 8 CPU cycles.

If an invalid value is entered, the error message will give a list of
valid values e.g.

    $ perf record -e intel_pt/cyc,cyc_thresh=15/u uname
Invalid cyc_thresh for intel_pt. Valid values are: 0-12

tools/perf/Documentation/intel-pt.txt is updated in a later patch as

b45fc0bfaf perf tools: Add Intel PT support for using MTC packets
MTC packets are a new Intel PT feature.

MTC packets provide finer grain timestamp information than TSC packets.

Support for this feature is indicated by:

  /sys/bus/event_source/devices/intel_pt/caps/mtc

which contains "1" if the feature is supported and "0" otherwise.

MTC packets can be requested using a PMU config term e.g. perf record -e
intel_pt/mtc/u sleep 1

The frequency of MTC packets can also be specified. e.g. perf record -e
intel_pt/mtc,mtc_period=2/u sleep 1

The default value is 3 or the nearest lower value that is supported. 0
is always supported.

Valid values are given by:

/sys/bus/event_source/devices/intel_pt/caps/mtc_periods

which contains a hexadecimal value, the bits of which represent valid
values e.g. bit 2 set means value 2 is valid.

The value is converted to the MTC frequency as:

	CTC-frequency / (2 ^ value)

e.g. value 3 means one eighth of CTC-frequency

Where CTC is the hardware crystal clock, the frequency of which can be
related to TSC via values provided in cpuid leaf 0x15.

If an invalid value is entered, the error message will give a list of
valid values e.g.

	$ perf record -e intel_pt/mtc_period=15/u uname
Invalid mtc_period for intel_pt. Valid values are: 0,3,6,9

bc9b6bf07c perf tools: Add Intel PT support for PSB periods
The PSB packet is a synchronization packet that provides a starting
point for decoding or recovery from errors.

This patch adds support for a new Intel PT feature that allows the
frequency of PSB packets to be specified.

Support for this feature is indicated by
/sys/bus/event_source/devices/intel_pt/caps/psb_cyc which contains "1"
if the feature is supported and "0" otherwise.

The PSB period can be specified as a PMU config term e.g. perf record -e

Equally to decode an AUX area, the AUX area tracing type must be added
to the perf_event__process_auxtrace_info() function.

This patch makes those two changes plus hooks up default config for the
intel_pt PMU. Also some brief documentation is provided for using the
tools with intel_pt.

90e457f7be perf tools: Add Intel PT support
Add support for Intel Processor Trace.

Intel PT support fits within the new auxtrace infrastructure. Recording
is supporting by identifying the Intel PT PMU, parsing options and
setting up events.

Decoding is supported by queuing up trace data by cpu or thread and then
decoding synchronously delivering synthesized event samples into the
session processing for tools to consume.

93df8a1ed6 perf tools: Add empty Build files for architectures lacking them
perf currently fails to build on MIPS as there is no
tools/perf/arch/mips/Build file. Adding an empty file fixes this as
there are no MIPS-specific sources to build.

It looks like the same is needed for Alpha and PA-RISC, though I
haven't been able to test those.

d5c2e2c17a perf probe ppc64le: Prefer symbol table lookup over DWARF
Use symbol table lookups by default if DWARF is not necessary, since
powerpc ABIv2 encodes local entry points in the symbol table and the
function entry address in DWARF may not be appropriate for kprobes, as
described here:

https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=17638

"The DWARF address ranges deliberately include the *whole* function,
both global and local entry points."
...
"If you want to set probes on a local entry point, you should look up
the symbol in the main symbol table (not DWARF), and check the st_other
bits; they will indicate whether the function has a local entry point,
and what its offset from the global entry point is. Note that GDB does
the same when setting a breakpoint on a function entry."

5e8c0fb6a9 perf build: Add arch x86 objects building
Move the x86 arch objects building under build framework to be included

Adding also arch/$(ARCH)/Build files for the rest of the archs. The
reason for this is that in arch/Build we now do:

  +libperf-y += $(ARCH)/

which would make the build to fail on other architectures, because the
build framework requires 'Build' file in nested directories and this
patch adds it only for x86.

9daa81239e perf kvm: Move arch specific code into arch/
Parts of a 'perf kvm stat' code make sense only for x86.

Let's move this code into the arch/x86/kvm-stat.c file and add
util/kvm-stat.h for generic structure definitions.

Add a global array 'kvm_reg_events_ops' for accessing the arch-specific
'kvm_events_ops' from generic code.

Since the several global arrays (i.e. 'kvm_events_tp') have been moved
to arch/*, we can not know their sizes and use them directly in
builtin-kvm.c. This patch fixes that problem by adding trimming NULL
element to each array and changing the behavior of their handlers in
generic code.

a60335ba32 perf tools powerpc: Adjust callchain based on DWARF debug info
When saving the callchain on Power, the kernel conservatively saves excess
entries in the callchain. A few of these entries are needed in some cases
but not others. We should use the DWARF debug information to determine
when the entries are needed.

Eg: the value in the link register (LR) is needed only when it holds the
return address of a function. At other times it must be ignored.

If the unnecessary entries are not ignored, we end up with duplicate arcs
in the call-graphs.

Use the DWARF debug information to determine if any callchain entries
should be ignored when building call-graphs.
