Tasks the are being deboosted from SCHED_DEADLINE might enter
enqueue_task_dl() one last time and hit an erroneous BUG_ON condition:
since they are not boosted anymore, the if (is_dl_boosted()) branch is
not taken, but the else if (!dl_prio) is and inside this one we
BUG_ON(!is_dl_boosted), which is of course false (BUG_ON triggered)
otherwise we had entered the if branch above. Long story short, the
current condition doesn't make sense and always leads to triggering of a
BUG.
Fix this by only checking enqueue flags, properly: ENQUEUE_REPLENISH has
to be present, but additional flags are not a problem.

The task causing this is the `cppc_fie` DL task introduced by
commit 1eb5dde674f5 ("cpufreq: CPPC: Add support for frequency
invariance").
With CONFIG_ACPI_CPPC_CPUFREQ_FIE=y and schedutil cpufreq governor on
slow-switching system (like on this Ampere Altra WIWYNN Mt. Jade Arm
Server):

is in `non_contending` state, migrate_task_rq_dl() calls
sub_running_bw()->__sub_running_bw()->cpufreq_update_util()->

Fix this by updating the clock for a non_contending task in
migrate_task_rq_dl() before calling sub_running_bw().

It is possible for sched_getattr() to incorrectly report the state of
the reset_on_fork flag when called on a deadline task.
Indeed, if the flag was set on a deadline task using sched_setattr()
with flags (SCHED_FLAG_RESET_ON_FORK | SCHED_FLAG_KEEP_PARAMS), then
p->sched_reset_on_fork will be set, but __setscheduler() will bail out
early, which means that the dl_se->flags will not get updated by
__setscheduler_params()->__setparam_dl(). Consequently, if
sched_getattr() is then called on the task, __getparam_dl() will
override kattr.sched_flags with the now out-of-date copy in dl_se->flags
and report the stale value to userspace.
To fix this, make sure to only copy the flags that are relevant to
sched_deadline to and from the dl_se->flags field.

DL keeps track of the utilization on a per-rq basis with the structure
avg_dl. This utilization is updated during task_tick_dl(),
put_prev_task_dl() and set_next_task_dl(). However, when the current
running task changes its policy, set_next_task_dl() which would usually
take care of updating the utilization when the rq starts running DL
tasks, will not see a such change, leaving the avg_dl structure outdated.
When that very same task will be dequeued later, put_prev_task_dl() will
then update the utilization, based on a wrong last_update_time, leading to
a huge spike in the DL utilization signal.
The signal would eventually recover from this issue after few ms. Even
if no DL tasks are run, avg_dl is also updated in
__update_blocked_others(). But as the CPU capacity depends partly on the
avg_dl, this issue has nonetheless a significant impact on the scheduler.
Fix this issue by ensuring a load update when a running task changes
its policy to DL.

When change sched_rt_{runtime, period}_us, we validate that the new
settings should at least accommodate the currently allocated -dl
bandwidth:

But under CONFIG_SMP, dl_bw is per root domain , but not per CPU,
dl_b->total_bw is the allocated bandwidth of the whole root domain.
Instead, we should compare dl_b->total_bw against "cpus*new_bw",
where 'cpus' is the number of CPUs of the root domain.
Also, below annotation(in kernel/sched/sched.h) implied implementation
only appeared in SCHED_DEADLINE v2[1], then deadline scheduler kept
evolving till got merged(v9), but the annotation remains unchanged,
meaningless and misleading, update it.
* With respect to SMP, the bandwidth is given on a per-CPU basis,
* meaning that:
* - dl_bw (< 100%) is the bandwidth of the system (group) on each CPU;
* - dl_total_bw array contains, in the i-eth element, the currently

Daniel reported a similar situation as well, by just letting ksoftirqd
run with DEADLINE (and eventually block on a mutex).
Problem is that boosted entities (Priority Inheritance) use static
DEADLINE parameters of the top priority waiter. However, there might be
cases where top waiter could be a non-DEADLINE entity that is currently
boosted by a DEADLINE entity from a different lock chain (i.e., nested
priority chains involving entities of non-DEADLINE classes). In this
case, top waiter static DEADLINE parameters could be null (initialized
to 0 at fork()) and replenish_dl_entity() would hit a BUG().
Fix this by keeping track of the original donor and using its parameters
when a task is boosted.

stress-ng has a test (stress-ng --cyclic) that creates a set of threads
under SCHED_DEADLINE with the following parameters:
dl_runtime = 10000 (10 us)
dl_deadline = 100000 (100 us)
dl_period = 100000 (100 us)
These parameters are very aggressive. When using a system without HRTICK
set, these threads can easily execute longer than the dl_runtime because
the throttling happens with 1/HZ resolution.
During the main part of the test, the system works just fine because
the workload does not try to run over the 10 us. The problem happens at
the end of the test, on the exit() path. During exit(), the threads need
to do some cleanups that require real-time mutex locks, mainly those
related to memory management, resulting in this scenario:

BOOM: TASK B is runnable but !enqueued, holding TASK C: the system
crashes with hung task C.
This problem is avoided by removing the throttle state from the boosted
thread while boosting it (by TASK A in the example above), allowing it to
be queued and run boosted.
The next replenishment will take care of the runtime overrun, pushing
the deadline further away. See the "while (dl_se->runtime <= 0)" on
replenish_dl_entity() for more information.

When a boosted task gets throttled, what normally happens is that it's
immediately enqueued again with ENQUEUE_REPLENISH, which replenishes the
runtime and clears the dl_throttled flag. There is a special case however:
if the throttling happened on sched-out and the task has been deboosted in
the meantime, the replenish is skipped as the task will return to its
normal scheduling class. This leaves the task with the dl_throttled flag
set.
Now if the task gets boosted up to the deadline scheduling class again
while it is sleeping, it's still in the throttled state. The normal wakeup
however will enqueue the task with ENQUEUE_REPLENISH not set, so we don't
actually place it on the rq. Thus we end up with a task that is runnable,
but not actually on the rq and neither a immediate replenishment happens,
nor is the replenishment timer set up, so the task is stuck in
forever-throttled limbo.
Clear the dl_throttled flag before dropping back to the normal scheduling
class to fix this issue.

Now that the sched_class descriptors are defined in order via the linker
script vmlinux.lds.h, there's no reason to have a "next" pointer to the
previous priroity structure. The order of the sturctures can be aligned as
an array, and used to index and find the next sched_class descriptor.

In order to make a micro optimization in pick_next_task(), the order of the
sched class descriptor address must be in the same order as their priority
to each other. That is:
&idle_sched_class < &fair_sched_class < &rt_sched_class <
&dl_sched_class < &stop_sched_class
In order to guarantee this order of the sched class descriptors, add each
one into their own data section and force the order in the linker script.

The current SCHED_DEADLINE (DL) scheduler uses a global EDF scheduling
algorithm w/o considering CPU capacity or task utilization.
This works well on homogeneous systems where DL tasks are guaranteed
to have a bounded tardiness but presents issues on heterogeneous
systems.
A DL task can migrate to a CPU which does not have enough CPU capacity
to correctly serve the task (e.g. a task w/ 70ms runtime and 100ms
period on a CPU w/ 512 capacity).
Add the DL fitness function dl_task_fits_capacity() for DL admission
control on heterogeneous systems. A task fits onto a CPU if:
CPU original capacity / 1024 >= task runtime / task deadline
Use this function on heterogeneous systems to try to find a CPU which
meets this criterion during task wakeup, push and offline migration.
On homogeneous systems the original behavior of the DL admission
control should be retained.

The current SCHED_DEADLINE (DL) admission control ensures that
sum of reserved CPU bandwidth < x * M
where
x = /proc/sys/kernel/sched_rt_{runtime,period}_us
M = # CPUs in root domain.
DL admission control works well for homogeneous systems where the
capacity of all CPUs are equal (1024). I.e. bounded tardiness for DL
and non-starvation of non-DL tasks is guaranteed.
But on heterogeneous systems where capacity of CPUs are different it
could fail by over-allocating CPU time on smaller capacity CPUs.
On an Arm big.LITTLE/DynamIQ system DL tasks can easily starve other
tasks making it unusable.
Fix this by explicitly considering the CPU capacity in the DL admission
test by replacing M with the root domain CPU capacity sum.

Capacity-aware SCHED_DEADLINE Admission Control (AC) needs root domain
(rd) CPU capacity sum.
Introduce dl_bw_capacity() which for a symmetric rd w/ a CPU capacity
of SCHED_CAPACITY_SCALE simply relies on dl_bw_cpus() to return #CPUs
multiplied by SCHED_CAPACITY_SCALE.
For an asymmetric rd or a CPU capacity < SCHED_CAPACITY_SCALE it
computes the CPU capacity sum over rd span and cpu_active_mask.
A 'XXX Fix:' comment was added to highlight that if 'rq->rd ==
def_root_domain' AC should be performed against the capacity of the
CPU the task is running on rather the rd CPU capacity sum. This
issue already exists w/o capacity awareness.

Commit 67692435c4 ("sched: Rework pick_next_task() slow-path")
inadvertly introduced a race because it changed a previously
unexplored dependency between dropping the rq->lock and
sched_class::put_prev_task().
The comments about dropping rq->lock, in for example
newidle_balance(), only mentions the task being current and ->on_cpu
being set. But when we look at the 'change' pattern (in for example
sched_setnuma()):

It becomes obvious that if we do this after put_prev_task() has
already been called on @p, things go sideways. This is exactly what
the commit in question allows to happen when it does:
prev->sched_class->put_prev_task(rq, prev, rf);

newidle_balance(rq, rf);
The newidle_balance() call will drop rq->lock after we've called
put_prev_task() and that allows the above 'change' pattern to
interleave and mess up the state.
Furthermore, it turns out we lost the RT-pull when we put the last DL
task.
Fix both problems by extracting the balancing from put_prev_task() and
doing a multi-class balance() pass before put_prev_task().

for moving the CPU timer expiry out into task work so it can be

Avoid the RETRY_TASK case in the pick_next_task() slow path.
By doing the put_prev_task() early, we get the rt/deadline pull done,
and by testing rq->nr_running we know if we need newidle_balance().
This then gives a stable state to pick a task from.
Since the fast-path is fair only; it means the other classes will
always have pick_next_task(.prev=NULL, .rf=NULL) and we can simplify.

Currently the pick_next_task() loop is convoluted and ugly because of
how it can drop the rq->lock and needs to restart the picking.
For the RT/Deadline classes, it is put_prev_task() where we do
balancing, and we could do this before the picking loop. Make this
possible.

Because pick_next_task() implies set_curr_task() and some of the
details haven't mattered too much, some of what _should_ be in
set_curr_task() ended up in pick_next_task, correct this.
This prepares the way for a pick_next_task() variant that does not
affect the current state; allowing remote picking.

When the topology of root domains is modified by CPUset or CPUhotplug
operations information about the current deadline bandwidth held in the
root domain is lost.
This patch addresses the issue by recalculating the lost deadline
bandwidth information by circling through the deadline tasks held in
CPUsets and adding their current load to the root domain they are
associated with.

In commit:
4b53a3412d ("sched/core: Remove the tsk_nr_cpus_allowed() wrapper")
the tsk_nr_cpus_allowed() wrapper was removed. There was not
much difference in !RT but in RT we used this to implement
migrate_disable(). Within a migrate_disable() section the CPU mask is
restricted to single CPU while the "normal" CPU mask remains untouched.
As an alternative implementation Ingo suggested to use:

In this case, the safest thing to do is to immediately decrease
the running bandwidth of the task, without trying to re-arm the 0-lag timer.

The current implementation of load tracking invariance scales the
contribution with current frequency and uarch performance (only for
utilization) of the CPU. One main result of this formula is that the
figures are capped by current capacity of CPU. Another one is that the
load_avg is not invariant because not scaled with uarch.
The util_avg of a periodic task that runs r time slots every p time slots
varies in the range :
U * (1-y^r)/(1-y^p) * y^i < Utilization < U * (1-y^r)/(1-y^p)
with U is the max util_avg value = SCHED_CAPACITY_SCALE
At a lower capacity, the range becomes:
U * C * (1-y^r')/(1-y^p) * y^i' < Utilization < U * C * (1-y^r')/(1-y^p)
with C reflecting the compute capacity ratio between current capacity and
max capacity.
so C tries to compensate changes in (1-y^r') but it can't be accurate.
Instead of scaling the contribution value of PELT algo, we should scale the
running time. The PELT signal aims to track the amount of computation of
tasks and/or rq so it seems more correct to scale the running time to
reflect the effective amount of computation done since the last update.
In order to be fully invariant, we need to apply the same amount of
running time and idle time whatever the current capacity. Because running
at lower capacity implies that the task will run longer, we have to ensure
that the same amount of idle time will be applied when system becomes idle
and no idle time has been "stolen". But reaching the maximum utilization
value (SCHED_CAPACITY_SCALE) means that the task is seen as an
always-running task whatever the capacity of the CPU (even at max compute
capacity). In this case, we can discard this "stolen" idle times which
becomes meaningless.
In order to achieve this time scaling, a new clock_pelt is created per rq.
The increase of this clock scales with current capacity when something
is running on rq and synchronizes with clock_task when rq is idle. With
this mechanism, we ensure the same running and idle time whatever the
current capacity. This also enables to simplify the pelt algorithm by
removing all references of uarch and frequency and applying the same
contribution to utilization and loads. Furthermore, the scaling is done
only once per update of clock (update_rq_clock_task()) instead of during
each update of sched_entities and cfs/rt/dl_rq of the rq like the current
implementation. This is interesting when cgroup are involved as shown in
the results below:
On a hikey (octo Arm64 platform).
Performance cpufreq governor and only shallowest c-state to remove variance
generated by those power features so we only track the impact of pelt algo.

Then, the responsiveness of PELT is improved when CPU is not running at max
capacity with this new algorithm. I have put below some examples of
duration to reach some typical load values according to the capacity of the
CPU with current implementation and with this patch. These values has been
computed based on the geometric series and the half period value:

On my hikey (octo Arm64 platform) with schedutil governor, the time to

When we pick the next task, we will do the following for the task:
1) p->se.exec_start = rq_clock_task(rq);
2) dequeue_pushable(_dl)_task(rq, p);
When we call set_curr_task(), we also need to do the same thing
above. In rt.c, the code at 1) is in the _pick_next_task_rt()
and the code at 2) is in the pick_next_task_rt(). If we put two
operations in one function, maybe better. So, we introduce a new
function set_next_task(), which is responsible for doing the above.
By introducing the function we can get rid of calling the
dequeue_pushable(_dl)_task() directly(We can call set_next_task())
in pick_next_task() and have better code readability and reuse.
In set_curr_task_rt(), we also can call set_next_task().
Do this things such that we end up with:

syzkaller reproducer runs a bunch of threads that constantly switch
between DEADLINE and NORMAL classes while interacting through futexes.
The splat above is caused by the fact that if a DEADLINE task is setattr
back to NORMAL while in non_contending state (blocked on a futex -
inactive timer armed), its contribution to running_bw is not removed
before sub_rq_bw() gets called (!task_on_rq_queued() branch) and the
latter sees running_bw > this_bw.
Fix it by removing a task contribution from running_bw if the task is
not queued and in non_contending state while switched to a different
class.
